genesisBased on their own experience in selforganisation and living together of different cultures here in Berlin, plus the experience of their expanded study trips, a group of former squatters, founded in the summer of 1995 the association SONED Friedrichshain.
We are the junction- and partner arrangement of the Southern Networks for Environment and Development, section Africa, situated in Nairobi. During a travel to Kenia (1995), we came to know Godfrey M` Mwereria, the coordinator of SONED Africa. He coordinated the African initiative for a sustainable global economy order, which reanimated the traditional rural, collective structure, through sustainable, participatory development on the community level. It publicized the intercommunication and the fair exchange between the „Graswurzelkommunen“ in a regional and global way.
IBased on this political coherency, the work of SONED Friedrichshain e.V is not only situated in the neighbourhood. They also operate in an international way, with different local partners in various projects, with several focus points.
At the moment the association counts with 50 members. The work of the association is basically voluntary and funds itself with donations, membership subscriptions and deliveries of different soldiery actions.
International projects
The projects outside of Germany are only situated on the African continent. As a small association it is impossible to work worldwide, but we keep contact to diverse NGO`s in Berlin, who are involved in Asia and South America.
From our first important focus on Kenia, our work developed in the last years, more and more to Nigeria. In Burkina Faso several educational projects have been achieved. Through our African members, we get in contact with Mosambique and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
National projects
The second area of operation from SONED is the national educational work. We organize regularly events and lectures about developmentally themes. Our members also attend participations at ecological and social networks- also without the work from development cooperation.
Apart from this work, SONED represent a local institution, who take part on the social and cultural life in the district Friedrichshain.
